One might think that the main benefit of a volunteer is the giving of time and effort to someone or something. And while that is true, it is also true that real benefits are bestowed upon the volunteer. My experience as an event volunteer and Blue Zones Restaurant Ambassador led to the discovery of my purpose in life, and helped define how that purpose is lived.
The range of services that volunteers are able to participate in is remarkable in scope, depth and relevance. A few years ago, I obtained CPR training through BCHD (at Adventureplex) and actually administered CPR on a friend not long thereafter when he was stricken while we were having lunch in downtown LA. At present time, I'm receiving Mental Health First Aid training, that leads to certification. It did, but should not have been a surprise to learn that 1 in 5 people are diagnosed with a mental disorder. This training will enable me and other volunteers to recognize the signs and symptoms of people we may encounter who are experiencing mental challenges or substance abuse and help them to begin the journey to recovery.
I am tickled to pieces and grateful that BCHD is revitalizing volunteer participation following the Covid-19 shutdown and look forward to many years of service. Thank you for enriching my life. Arnette Travis - Volunteer since 2011
